BOX SET GO

Better late than never? Once more, I promised myself that I’d actually do some writing this year and update the website properly. And once more I got a bit waylaid; this time by the ‘Lost Alternatives.’ (See previous post).
After spending some months attempting to track down bands, ex-managers, defunct bedroom labels and former bass players (looking for licensing information and the like) it’s finally finished, some months behind schedule – not least because a) we couldn’t sign it off till we’d ‘cleared’ the Mega City Four (which I’d have never forgiven myself for if we’d missed them off) and b) the sleeve notes did indeed run to something like 14,000 words in the end.
And that, I can tell, is a lot of adjectives (pulled from the bit of my brain that used to be an NME journalist and wrestled back into use to describe some of the bands that inspired them in the first place).
As explained in the last post, it’s not a big, shiny Britpop tribute. Nor is it an obscurist’s guide to the Nineties. Instead it’s a more personal narrative to the decade, which for me started at NME and ended at Radio 1 as John Peel’s warm-up man.
It’s got some good stuff on it I think – including a lot of records we championed on The Evening Session, but which never troubled the charts. In fact something like 19 of the tracks haven’t made it as far as today’s streaming services either, which seemed like an additional reason to give them a glimpse of daylight.
There’s a few tracks we tried for, but couldn’t obtain the rights to. And a handful we didn’t get because the bands or managers refused clearance (Belle & Sebastian, Stereolab….Lush?!?)
But it’s finished and available to pre-order at various online sites (Amazon of course, but I think its cheaper from the nice folk at Rough Trade: https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/music/various-lost-alternatives-steve-lamacqhttp:// ).

Or, we’d all sleep equally well in our beds, if you want to wait and buy the finished thing from your local record shop (I could mourn the closure of HMV in Oxford Street at this point, but that’s another story). In fact I’ve just remembered I must say thanks to everyone at Spillers Records in Cardiff, for letting us take the photos for the sleeve in their shop – and for being so welcoming and friendly on the day.
We’ll be back before you know it.
